Music in Ireland – PART 2
Last month we covered where to find a traditional Irish session. This month it's about what other types of music you'll find and where.
As previously mentioned, you can find pretty much anything in Dublin. And most towns have at least one pub that will have live music at least on the weekends. Some of the bigger towns and cities have bands playing in a park and of course there are quite often musicians busking on a city street.
The most unusual place that we've heard music was at Killarney Race Course. There was a good sized bandstand and a four piece band playing when we were there. They played between the races as the bandstand was situated trackside so they stopped as soon as the horses left the walking ring and went onto the course. They had a guitarist who was also their lead vocalist, fiddler, bassist and drummer and they kind of reminded us of...us. Their set list might well have been copied from one of ours as they mixed Irish songs like Fields of Athenry with popular tunes like Wagon Wheel. It was actually rather gratifying to hear a band in Ireland doing what we do!
Most pubs that don't have live music will have some kind of radio or playlist on in the background. Quite often you'll hear songs that may have been in the Eurovision song contest and a fair amount of techno-pop. But also a lot of American country music. At at pub in Rosscarbery we even heard Steve Earle's Guitar Town playing. You just never know what you'll hear! (Sort of like our set lists. LOL)
Here's our upcoming schedule:
On Friday, August 14th, we'll be at Thornbee Farm's Organic Press winery. The time is 5:00ish – 7:00pm. This is kind of a new thing at the OP with an It's Five O'Clock Somewhere sort of theme. Come out and start your weekend with a glass of organic wine, organic sandwiches & finger foods, and a bit of music. Thornbee Farm/The Organic Press is located at 915 Kuttruff Road, Walworth, NY. https://thornbeefarm.com/ https://theorganicpress.com/
We'll be the first of many bands to take the stage at Barry's Irish Festival on Friday, August 21st. The Festival opens at 4:00pm and we'll be playing from 5:30 – 6:20pm. The event will be held at Webster Fireman's Field, 1193 – 1207 Ridge Road, Webster, NY 14580. We'll be back at 3 Daughters Tap and Tavern (formerly Temple Bar and Grille) on Sunday, September 6th playing 6:30 – 9:30pm. 109 East Avenue, Rochester, NY. https://3daughterstapandtavern.com/
